Sawhill Ponds is a really pretty spot in east Boulder and one of our Favorite Colorado Places. The 18 ponds here were part of a mining operation until the 1970s, when water filled the pits and wildlife took over the area. This area is now a protected wetlands and a great place to watch the birds. People love to fish here or enjoy views of the ponds and the Flatirons. The trails are flat and the walk around the ponds is normally pretty uncrowded. Leashed dogs are welcome. When we visited, the area was incredibly green and quite lush for Colorado. This area is managed by Boulder County Open Space and Mountain Parks. Adjacent to Sawhill Ponds is Walden Ponds, which is similar, with great views and lots of wildlife.
