Ready to Make Your Move?I recently took a walk through Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge in Arvada and was stunned by the beauty of this oasis. An apple orchard was on part of this land at one time, and before that, this was a pristine area filled with wild grasses. Now, this area is a protected area managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. If you live in Arvada, Westminster, Wheat Ridge or Golden I recommend that you pay a visit to Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge.
At the Refuge, I picked up a “Self-Guided Tour” brochure that explains that “Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge is a community of habitats that are linked together and provide the essential components of life (food, shelter, and water) for a variety of plants and animals.” This is the mission of all our national wildlife refuges. According to the Fish and Wildlife Service, the are over 560 refuges in the system. This one is the smallest urban refuge and is about 72 acres.
Today, the land here is quiet, with beautiful views of the Rocky Mountains, tranquil ponds and big, beautiful sky. The refuge includes older cottonwood trees, canals and three ponds. There are native grasses, yucca, cactus and brush. It’s easy to walk around the well-marked paths and see the cattail wetlands, the mountains and the birds and other wildlife. This is a great place to take young people or others who may not want to go for a long or taxing hike, but still want to get out and enjoy the views and serenity.
The refuge is open from dawn until dusk. The east side is open from May until September and the west side is open year-round.
