Favorite Places – Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

Team Leader David and Emmie at the Sand Dunes.

The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is one of four national parks in Colorado. About 4 hours southwest of Denver, the park feels like another world. The huge expanse of unspoiled dunes covers about 30 square miles and rises 750 feet, making them the tallest in North America. The park itself is 150,000 acres. The dunes are surrounded by gorgeous mountain peaks that are part of the Sangre de Cristo Range, which provides a spectacular setting, especially at sunset.

In May, Medano Creek floods the area, turning it into Colorado’s most amazing beach. There’s great hiking and horseback riding, “sand surfing,” a wonderful welcome center that shows how the dunes were formed and RV and tent camping at Piñon Flats Campground. With the right four-wheel-drive vehicle, you can explore the area on the Medano Pass Primitive Road (check the park’s website for current conditions.)

One of the best parts of living in Colorado is reveling in all the state and this region have to offer! This fall, we hope you can enjoy what makes this part of the world so special.
